Time differences in the new website

posted Aug 26, 2009 11:19 AM by Deanna Chou

Some of you may notice that the times are totally off between the website, the event link and Smartrans. That's because the new site uses Google which picks up the local time zone of your google account.  I noticed this right away when my times were always three hours off from the events I created. When I created my google account back in Vermont, this recorded my timezone as EST.  Therefore, events that happened at 12pm PST showed up as 3pm when I loaded the website in the same browser as my gmail account.

I've done my very best to document the real time in the event itself with PST denotations but the only way to permanently fix this confusion is to change the timezone in your google calendar.  To do this go to calendar.google.com and click on Settings on the top right hand corner. Change your time zone to Pacific Time zone. This will reset all the times correctly on the website.

Old Web Site

During the web site transition, you may want to find content on our old web site.  For the time being, you can go to:

Unfortunately, the links on the old site will try to take you to the new site.  To fix this, you'll have to copy the link and add "old." in front of the "mit-club.org" part of the URL.

New Officers for 2009-2010

posted Jul 8, 2009 3:10 PM by Mike Koss

Greetings, fellow Alumni!

With the annual picnic coming up this weekend, I would like to formally announce that our club has a new slate of officers for the 2009-2010 year. After 7 years as President, I'm very happy to announce that Lola Ball will be serving as our new club President! As we all know, Lola has been the powerhouse behind the club since she arrived in Seattle, so it thrills me that she's going to be taking on the leadership role for the club.

Slate of Officers, 2009-2010:

President - Lola Ball '91
Programs - Deanna Lim '01
Finance - Kevin Chester '04
Membership - Michael Bernard '85
Communications - Judy Stein '78
Education - Carole Boelitz '91
Young Alumni - Nancy Phan '05
Sloan School - Maria Ehsan '97

I hope to see you at the picnic on Saturday!

New Web Site

This is an experiment in using Google Sites for our Club web site.  Using Google Sites has a number of advantages for our club:
  1. Our current site costs $100's per year in hosting fees due to the high cost of hosted Sharepoint server.  Google sites is free.
  2. Google Sites is a simpler service, and much more geared to Internet (as opposed to Intranet) use.
  3. Keeping our club calendar in a Google Calendar makes it easier for club members to import calendar items to their own calendars, or display them side-by-side with their own calendars.
  4. The Wiki-like interface of Google Sites is more approachable for our club volunteers to edit and update the site w/o technical help.
There are a few downsides:
  1. Formatting is only slightly customizable.  We can hope that with further development Google's service will improve over time.
  2. Transfering needed data and documents from our old site will take some time.
